The Naturezones Essay Competition

In the year of “International Biodiversity “we are launching our first annual

essay competition which is open to all 5-16 year olds.

The aim is to encourage the younger generation to explore the island’s ecology and discover how important it is to increase and improve the island’s biodiversity

The Naturezones Essay - annual competition for 5 - 16 year olds

Entry date no later than: Tuesday 6th July. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Wednesday 21st July

Category 1 - Primary Schools 5 - 8 years

a) Group/class Project. Pictoral Essay. Design and make a frieze that illustrates an area of bio-diversity on the Isle of Wight The frieze should be no more than 2 metres long and 1.5 metres high. Entries will be viewed in school. Please advise when entry is complete. Prize: Nest box and camera

b) Individual essay - Write a story about something in nature that you have seen or learnt about and illustrate it. Max two pictures. 1st prize: £25.00 book voucher 2 runners up: £15.00 book vouchers

Category 2 - Middle Schools 9 - 12 years

a) Group Project/class. Design a wildlife garden showing bio-diversity. Illustrations and explanations will be taken into consideration. Prize: nest box and camera

b) Individual essay.  Write a story about an aspect of Isle of Wight Bio-diversity. No more than 4 illustrations

1st Prize: £30.00 book voucher 2 runners up: £20.00 book vouchers

Category 3 - High Schools 13—16 year olds

a) Individual essay. Do a project on the island's bio-diversity or a part of it. No more than 1,500 words. Illustrations can be used. 1st Prize: £50.00 book voucher 2 runners up: £35.00 book voucher

b) Individual work. Create a pictoral essay on an aspect of the island's bio-diversity. This can include photography and drawings. 1st Prize: £50.00 book voucher 2 runners up: £35.00 book voucher

Consideration will be given to entrants who create all their own work (no copy and paste).
